In a recent development, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is making significant strides in promoting innovative building materials in rural areas. On March 29th, at the Horashan Village clinic in Seven Star Towns, villager Ma Jun shared his positive experience with a new construction material. “Building a house with this material is not only time-saving and labor-efficient, but it’s truly convenient. I plan to use this new material for my future home,†he said.
Ma Jun's new material is known as an EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) wall module. This advanced construction technology involves using heat-expandable polystyrene beads that are molded into various wall structures through specialized equipment. The result is a lightweight yet durable building solution that offers excellent thermal insulation properties.
Hao Hongrui, the general manager of Korla Haogong Building Materials Co., Ltd., which supplies these materials, explained that the EPS modules are used in combination with reinforced concrete to replace traditional materials like bricks and mud blocks. For a typical 150-square-meter house, this new material can reduce construction costs by approximately 15%, cut building time by at least 50%, and lower labor expenses by over 60%. Moreover, homes built with this material provide better temperature control, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer, with an insulation effect of up to 3°C to 5°C.
Korla Haogong is currently the first company in Xinjiang to master EPS module wall construction technology. Their innovation aligns with the region’s broader goals of developing green, energy-efficient rural housing. According to an official from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the Autonomous Region, the use of such high-performance building materials is a key part of the region’s efforts to improve living conditions in rural areas.
This initiative is being supported under the "Well-being and Enrichment" rural development program, which encourages the adoption of eco-friendly and energy-saving materials. As a result, EPS modules have been officially listed as one of the priority products for new building material promotion.
Recently, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region issued the "EPS Module Concrete Shear Wall Structural Engineering Technical Specification," which became effective on April 1, 2014. This marked the first technical standard specifically developed for construction projects in Xinjiang. It also represents the first official implementation of new material standards, signaling a major step forward in the region's commitment to modern, sustainable building practices.
