Similarly, Major General Luo Su warned about foreign interference in China’s biosafety and the possible use of GM technology as a strategic weapon. On the other hand, supporters argue that GM technology is essential for addressing food security. With a growing population and limited resources, transgenic crops offer practical solutions. According to Zhang Qifa, a leading scientist, delaying GM commercialization is a mistake. Xu Haibin, director of the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, noted that GM foods are already part of daily life, and avoiding them is nearly impossible. Professor Song Xiaoling from Nanjing Agricultural University emphasized that GM foods undergo rigorous testing before being approved. She pointed out that no clear evidence shows harm to humans, and China has strict safety regulations in place. Fang Zhouzi, a well-known science writer, has eaten GM foods for over a decade and argues that they are safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly. Chen Zhiwu, a Yale professor, highlighted the historical impact of GM crops, comparing them to the introduction of corn and sweet potatoes in China. He stressed that GM technology could help address food security concerns and urged society to move beyond conspiracy theories. Ultimately, the debate around GM foods reflects broader societal concerns. While some fear unknown risks, others see great potential. The key lies in transparency, informed choice, and ensuring public safety. As Yuan Longping once said, the safety of GM foods may take generations to fully understand.
