The United States allows the use of benzoic acid in animal feed and drinking water

On March 13, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a new regulation allowing the use of benzoic acid as a feed additive in pig feed and drinking water. This rule became effective immediately upon its publication. Those who wish to challenge or provide feedback can submit a written request or attend a hearing by April 14, 2014. Below are the key details of the regulation: 1. Benzoic acid may be used as a feed acidifier to lower the pH of the feed. The maximum allowable concentration in whole pig feed is 0.5% of the total feed. 2. The additive must contain at least 99.5% benzoic acid (CAS No. 65-85-0). It should not contain more than 0.01% by weight of impurities such as 2-methylbiphenyl, 3-methylbiphenyl, 4-methylbiphenyl, benzyl benzoate, or dimethylbiphenyl isomers. 3. To ensure safe handling and usage, labels must include the following information: - The name of the additive. - Clear instructions for use, emphasizing that benzoic acid must be evenly distributed and thoroughly mixed into the feed. - Warnings and safety precautions related to the chemical's properties. - A statement indicating that benzoic acid can be irritating. - Information on emergency procedures in case of accidental exposure. - Contact details for reporting adverse reactions or requesting a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This update reflects the FDA’s ongoing efforts to regulate feed additives while ensuring the health and safety of livestock and workers involved in animal farming.
