Use winter leisure to accumulate farmyard manure

It's an excellent time to prepare farmyard manure during winter. However, due to the low temperatures and the challenges of effective fermentation, it's essential to pay attention to several key steps: First, choose a suitable location for composting. The site should be close to the manure source, sheltered from the wind, and exposed to sunlight for better heat retention. It should also be convenient for transportation to make the process more efficient. When building the compost pile, it's best to shape it into a rounded heap with a height of over one meter. This helps in maintaining insulation and promoting faster decomposition. Start by laying a layer of soil or dry grass at the base, then gradually add layers of mixed farmyard manure. To prevent freezing and speed up the fermentation process, you can create small pits within the pile. For larger piles, two pits can be dug. Place weeds or organic waste in these pits, light them on fire, and let them smolder slowly. This generates heat that aids in the composting process. Afterward, cover the pile with a thick layer of dry grass, about 30 to 50 centimeters thick, to provide insulation. Then, apply a layer of mud or, if available, cover it with plastic sheeting to further retain heat and moisture. By following these steps, you can effectively manage the composting process even in cold weather, ensuring that the manure is well-fermented and ready for use in the next growing season. 【Comment】 【Print this article】 【Close this page】 【Large, medium and small】
