Smoky sky with fire "air purification" industry

In recent days, fog and haze have been affecting central and eastern parts of China, sparking widespread concern among citizens. PM2.5 has become a hot topic, with many people seeking ways to protect themselves from the deteriorating air quality. On December 6th, a reporter visited several large supermarkets and home appliance stores in the city and found that products related to PM2.5—such as masks, air purifiers, and even certain household items—were in high demand. At Xinliandian Xinhua Store, a salesperson named Ms. Cao mentioned that since the start of winter this year, air purifier sales have significantly increased. In November alone, the store sold nearly 20 units. Similarly, at Gu De Plaza and Gome Appliances, staff reported a surge in air purifier sales, with many customers specifically looking for models that target PM2.5 removal. Many residents expressed concerns about the current air pollution levels, especially those with elderly or young family members. Ms. Liu, a resident of Fuhai Renju in the High-tech Zone, said, “With such serious air pollution, we need to use an air purifier at home to ensure better indoor air quality.” Masks also saw a spike in demand. At local pharmacies, various types of masks—non-woven, anti-pollen, and anti-mite—were on display, with many customers asking for recommendations. Some even shared online warnings that “air pollution is worse than SARS,” prompting more people to take precautions. In addition to air purifiers and masks, green plants were being marketed as natural air purifiers. A flower shop owner in Kui Wen District claimed that plants could help reduce dust and PM2.5 levels indoors, which led to increased plant sales in November. The market for air purification products is highly varied, with prices ranging from just a few yuan to thousands. At a major appliance store near Fushou East Street and Beihai Road, air purifiers came in numerous brands and price ranges, with some high-end models reaching nearly 10,000 yuan. Salespeople highlighted features like negative ion technology, activated carbon filters, and multi-layer filtration systems. On Taobao, the variety of PM2.5 masks was equally impressive, with prices ranging from as low as 0.01 yuan to over 88,888 yuan. Many products featured keywords like “negative ions” and “activated carbon,” promising to remove pollutants like smoke, dust, and formaldehyde. However, many consumers were confused by the wide range of options and pricing. Ms. Wang, a resident of Beihai Garden, said, “It's hard to tell which one is better. The prices are so different, but the functions seem similar.” Industry insiders warned that some air purifiers exaggerate their PM2.5 removal rates. According to a report by the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee, most samples had a PM2.5 removal rate above 78%, but very few actually reached the advertised 99%. There is currently no unified standard for measuring and evaluating air purifier performance, leading to inconsistencies in product claims. To protect consumers, experts suggest that national standards should be improved, and regulatory bodies should strengthen oversight. At the same time, businesses should act responsibly, and consumers are advised to choose air purifiers based on their specific needs rather than marketing hype.
