US researchers improve stacked photovoltaic cell connectivity

Researchers from North Carolina State University have made a breakthrough in improving the connectivity between stacked solar cells, which has significantly boosted the efficiency of photovoltaic systems and lowered the cost of solar power generation. This advancement could play a key role in making renewable energy more accessible and affordable. According to the university, the new connection technology allows the solar cells to operate at extremely high solar energy densities—up to 70,000 times the normal intensity—without experiencing significant voltage drops, energy loss, or excessive heat buildup. This is a major step forward for high-performance solar technologies. Stacked solar cells, also known as tandem cells, are composed of multiple layers of photovoltaic materials stacked on top of each other. These cells are currently among the most efficient solar technologies available, with laboratory models achieving photoelectric conversion efficiencies of up to 45%. However, maintaining efficiency across these layers has always been a challenge. The research team at NC State discovered that traditional interconnections between the layers can cause unwanted energy losses by either absorbing light or interfering with the electrical output. To address this, they introduced a novel approach: embedding an ultra-thin layer of gallium arsenide within the cell contacts. Salah Bedair, a professor of electrical engineering and lead author of the study, explained that this thin gallium arsenide layer effectively eliminates voltage losses without blocking any incoming sunlight. As a result, the system maintains high efficiency even under intense light conditions. Bedair emphasized that this innovation doesn't require building larger, more expensive solar panels. Instead, it enables the use of smaller cells combined with inexpensive optical concentrators to capture and focus more sunlight. This not only increases electricity output but also reduces overall system costs. This development could revolutionize the solar industry by making high-efficiency photovoltaics more practical and cost-effective, paving the way for broader adoption of clean energy solutions.
