Nine major decoration matters needing attention

Buying a house and decorating it is a major decision for every family, but not everyone has the skills or experience to do it well. In fact, many people are complete beginners when it comes to home decoration. However, it's impossible to ignore the importance of a well-decorated space. That’s why it’s essential to learn the basics and be aware of key considerations during the process. One of the first things to keep in mind is that when decorating balconies and bathrooms, you should use lightweight materials as much as possible. Overloading a balcony can be dangerous and even lead to structural failure. Similarly, in the living room, you must avoid drilling into load-bearing walls or altering any structural elements like walls connecting the balcony to doors or windows. Changing the size of existing doors or adding new ones can compromise the building’s integrity. When it comes to flooring, it's important to avoid using heavy materials like marble on the ground floor. Marble is significantly heavier than tiles or wood, and if the entire floor is covered with it, it could put excessive pressure on the structure. For floors above the second level, the total weight of the flooring material should not exceed 40 kg per square meter—especially if the building hasn’t been officially assessed for safety. Waterproofing in bathrooms and toilets is another critical step. Before starting any work, block the drain and fill the area with at least 5 cm of water. Perform a water test to check for leaks. If there's any leakage, the waterproofing needs to be redone. Even if no leaks are found, be careful during construction not to damage the waterproof layer or make unauthorized changes to the plumbing or heating system. During the construction phase, avoid drilling holes or hanging ceilings on concrete circular hole plates, as this can weaken the structure. When choosing electrical wiring, always go for copper wires instead of aluminum. Aluminum has poor conductivity and can cause overheating, loose connections, and even fires. Also, avoid directly embedding wires in walls without proper protection—use regular conduits to prevent electric shocks or fire hazards. Some people tend to overdo the living room decor by covering all four walls with panels and installing multi-layered ceilings. While this might look luxurious, it takes up valuable space, increases costs, and can be a fire hazard. A low ceiling can also create an uncomfortable, cramped feeling in the room. Safety around gas pipes and equipment is equally important. Never dismantle or modify gas lines without permission, as this can disrupt the system and pose serious risks. Keep a minimum clearance of 10 cm between power lines and gas pipes, and at least 3 cm between wires and gas lines to prevent accidents. Lastly, never place a gas stove inside a wooden cabinet or wrap the gas valve in one. In case of a fire, you may not be able to reach the gas valve quickly, leading to potentially catastrophic consequences. Always ensure that gas appliances are installed safely and properly. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safer, more functional, and aesthetically pleasing home environment.
