American firefighter volunteers and positions

Firefighter volunteers and professional firefighters both adhere to the standards outlined in NFPA 1001, but in many U.S. states, volunteer firefighters are not required to obtain formal certification. This is largely due to the fact that most volunteers hold full-time jobs outside of their firefighting duties, making it difficult for them to commit to full-time training programs. To address this, local fire departments often arrange weekly or monthly training sessions, ensuring that volunteers maintain the essential skills needed for emergency response.

In some areas, such as Florida, firefighter volunteers may have more restrictions on the types of tasks they can perform, while in other regions, entire fire departments are staffed entirely by volunteers. These volunteers often include individuals who serve as engine drivers—commonly referred to as "engineers." Many of these engineers have prior experience driving large vehicles like school buses or trucks, which helps them manage fire apparatus efficiently. In addition to operating the vehicle, engineers are also responsible for managing the hose pump and other critical equipment during emergencies.

For career firefighters, becoming an engineer is typically one of the first steps in a long-term advancement path within the department. Most firefighters become eligible for this role after several years of service and demonstrated skill. As they gain more experience, they may move up to roles such as firefighter, then engineer, followed by positions like Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Commander, Deputy Commander, Assistant Chief, and eventually team leader. These roles come with increasing levels of responsibility, including command over operations, training, and administrative duties.
