Dr. Peng Hongliang’s research results are expected to significantly reduce the cost of fuel cells

In the first author's title was "High Performance Fe-and N-Doped Carbon Catalyst with Graphene Structure or Oxygen Reduction" (with iron and nitrogen simultaneously doping high-performance carbon with graphene structure). Research papers on basic fuel cell catalysts have recently been published in the "Scientific Reports" publication of the Nature Publishing Group. This publication is a comprehensive online journal newly launched by the British Natural Publishing Group in 2011. It is currently covered by PubMed and SCI and covers research fields covering various disciplines in the natural sciences.

Peng Hongliang’s fuel cell research group used iron salts to catalyze the simultaneous polymerization of melamine and aniline to obtain a mixture of polymers containing iron, melamine, and polyaniline. The mixture was used as a precursor and was subjected to thermal cracking, acid treatment, and other procedures. A carbon-based catalyst having a graphene structure of iron and nitrogen simultaneously doped is obtained. The oxygen reduction catalytic performance of this catalyst is already very close to the commercial platinum carbon catalyst, and the single cell test results of the catalyst are also in the international leading ranks. The reviewer of the manuscript believed that the research results of the research group had excellently developed the work of the predecessors. This non-precious metal showed good oxygen reduction activity in the acidic medium, which was comparable to the good single cell performance of the existing catalysts.

The research achievements of the fuel cell research group are an important part of the research and development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The battery is a clean and efficient green power supply and is the best power source for electric vehicles. If this research result is applied, it will change the current status of the use of high-cost precious metal platinum as a catalyst for fuel cells, significantly reduce the cost of fuel cells, and effectively promote the development and commercialization of fuel cell technology.

According to reports, the study of new non-precious metal catalysts for replacing platinum as a cathode catalyst for fuel cells has become the most important research topic in the field of fuel cells in recent years. As early as February 2010, the world’s largest demonstration power plant for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, designed and built by South China University of Technology, was established in Guangzhou University City. With the support of the National Natural Science Foundation and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, In recent years, the research group has continuously achieved important achievements and breakthroughs in the research and development of fuel cells.
