STMicroelectronics announced on January 5, 2016 the second-generation laser distance sensor "VL53L0" based on the company's FlightSense technology. Targeted uses are auto-focus mechanisms for cameras built into smartphones and tablets, as well as robots, drones, IoT devices, and wearable devices.
FlightSense is a distance measurement technology based on ToF (Time of Flight) technology developed by STMicroelectronics. By measuring the time when the projected infrared light is reflected back after encountering the object, the distance to the object is calculated. It is possible to measure without depending on the surface state of the object. The first-generation product "VL6180X" was released in 2014 and is a proximity sensor that measures a distance of 0 to 10cm.
The new product VL53L0 can also measure objects 2m away. Even if the distance is 2m, it can be short-ranged in less than 30ms, so the camera system can automatically focus in video mode and continuous shooting mode. In addition, in the case of low illumination and low contrast, which were difficult to achieve in the past, the use of new products also enables auto focus. Therefore, it can be used for distance measurement of robots, drones, IoT devices, wearable devices, and the like.
The new product integrates a VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) with a wavelength of 940 nm, a Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) for receiving light, and an MCU. The external interface is I2C, using a single power supply. The package size is 4.4mm × 2.4mm × 1mm, which is smaller than the 4.8mm × 2.8mm × 1.0mm of the first generation product. Reflow soldering (1 time) can be used.
