Distinguish related wood from mahogany furniture

There are various types of wood used in mahogany furniture, including Hainan huanghuali, Vietnamese huanghuali, ironwood, and red rosewood. Experts have shared several methods to help identify these different woods, which can be quite challenging for the average consumer.

Yang Hongbin, a manager at a private company in Yunnan, explained that there are numerous varieties of redwood, sourced from Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. However, the price differences between these woods can be significant. Some sellers fail to disclose the origin or deliberately confuse the species, making it difficult for buyers to tell them apart.

For instance, Vietnamese huanghuali is often mistaken for Hainan huanghuali. Both emit a strong fragrance when cut and display vibrant patterns after polishing, with a golden yellow color, fine grain, and smooth texture that resembles a mirror. They also feature nodules that form unique, almost smiling patterns. However, Hainan huanghuali has a clearer, more consistent grain, while Vietnamese huanghuali tends to have a thicker, less defined texture with irregular spacing and occasional abrupt changes. Additionally, Vietnamese huanghuali lacks the distinct aroma of its Hainan counterpart and has a lighter color, with less refined "ghost face" patterns. However, it generally has a denser trunk.

Another common deception involves mixing African ebony with Kalimantan ebony, as both have black stripes. Striped ebony features alternating black and white stripes, while African ebony and Kalimantan ebony have more pronounced white streaks. Ebony wood is known for its fine structure, high density, and ability to sink in water, with no noticeable scent.

African chicken wing wood is frequently sold as Burmese chicken wing wood due to its significantly lower price. When distinguishing between the two, the first difference lies in the finish—Burmese chicken wing wood is smoother and more delicate, while African chicken wing wood feels rougher. The second factor is specific gravity; Burmese chicken wing wood is denser. Lastly, the size of the raw material matters. Burmese chicken wing wood is typically smaller, used mainly for chairs, small tables, and other compact furniture, while African chicken wing wood comes from larger trees, making it suitable for large pieces like cabinets and arhat beds.
