Distinguish related wood from mahogany furniture

There are various types of mahogany and other premium woods used in furniture, such as Hainan huanghuali, Vietnamese huanghuali, iron peas, and red rosewood. Experts have shared several tips to help identify these different wood species accurately.

Yang Hongbin, a manager at a private company in Yunnan, explained that there are numerous varieties of redwood, sourced from Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. However, the price differences between these woods can be significant. Some sellers do not clearly state the origin or even intentionally confuse the species, making it hard for consumers to tell them apart.

For example, Vietnamese huanghuali is often mistaken for Hainan huanghuali. Both emit a strong scent when cut, and after polishing, they display vibrant patterns with a golden yellow color. Their pores are small, and the surface feels smooth, almost like a mirror. They also feature nodules that create unique "grimace" patterns. However, Hainan huanghuali has a clearer and more consistent texture, while Vietnamese huanghuali tends to have a slightly coarser grain, with irregular and inconsistent patterns. It lacks the distinct aroma of Hainan huanghuali, has a lighter color, and the "ghost face" pattern is less pronounced. On the other hand, Vietnamese huanghuali is generally thicker in diameter.

Another common practice is mixing African ebony with Kalimantan wood to mimic striped ebony. While both have black stripes, striped ebony features alternating black and white lines, whereas African ebony and Kalimantan have more prominent white streaks. Ebony has a fine grain, is dense, sinks in water, and has no noticeable scent.

African chicken wing wood is frequently sold as Burmese chicken wing wood due to its lower cost. When identifying the two, one key difference is the finish—Burmese chicken wing wood has a smoother and more delicate surface, while African chicken wing wood feels rougher. Another factor is specific gravity; Burmese chicken wing wood is denser. Additionally, the size of the raw material matters. Burmese chicken wing wood is typically smaller in diameter and used for chairs, small tables, and other compact furniture, while African chicken wing wood comes from larger trees and is suitable for bigger pieces like cabinets and Arhat beds.
