Chen Bin, chief designer of the food and nutrition subsystem of the manned spaceflight astronaut system, introduced that space food is safe, nutritious, efficient, convenient, and diverse.
Due to the limited capacity and volume of the spacecraft and the special space environment, the advantages of aerospace foods such as high nutrition, high performance, and convenience are very prominent. Chen Bin said that if it is applied to civilian use, it will be welcomed in polar expeditions, mountaineering, tourism and other activities.
In addition, aerospace food adopts the most stringent food production standards in the world. It has near-rigorous standards from raw material selection, processing technology, and production process to the whole process of analysis and testing. For example, the requirements for air cleanliness of production workshops are the same as those for drug production. Chen Bin said that as food safety becomes more and more important, the advantages of aerospace foods in terms of safety will become more apparent.
“We have been committed to industrializing aerospace foods since 2006.†Chen Bin said that at present, they have cooperated with relevant companies, provided by the Astronaut Center with production technology, technology and quality standards, and cooperative enterprises provide production plants and equipment.
