This was revealed at the fifth working meeting of the China-U.S. Green Partnership (Wetland Research) held in Shanghai yesterday.
Experts from China and the United States believe that Spartina alterniflora has more than 20 years of introduction history in many regions of the world. Spartina alterniflora in these regions has formed a good and stable community structure with local native species and become domesticated species. At the same time, Spartina alterniflora is an ecological restoration engineering species with various advantages. The developed root system has a strong sand-fixing effect and promotes the development of sandbars. The Chongxi Wetland Science Experimental Station has shown that high-fertility Spartina alterniflora synthesizes and transports large amounts of organic matter in the sea, which is also an important part of the marine food chain. What's more, Spartina alterniflora has excellent characteristics in carbon sequestration. It can absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, synthesize it into organic nutrients, and solidify it into wetland soil to form a carbon sequestration effect, which is beneficial to low Carbon emissions.
In 2008, China and the United States signed the “Green Partner Program under the China-US Energy and Environment Decade Cooperation Frameworkâ€. The two cities, enterprises, and universities established a green partnership with each other. East China Normal University and Tulane University have become Wetland research area "partners".
