(1) Effective Utilization of Appropriate Selection: Figure 2 highlights the CNC vertical machining center manufactured by Taiwan's Yongjin Machinery. This equipment is specifically employed to handle the large and small holes of connecting rods for diesel engine components in our diesel locomotives. The original King Kong double-head boring machine failed to meet the process demands due to the stringent requirements for hole processing. Thus, the primary castings of the machine utilize high-quality Meehanite cast iron, ensuring structural stability and reliability. The machine's performance hinges significantly on the casting material. Regarding hole processing, Yongjin has meticulously focused on the spindle. Equipped with SKF precision angular contact ball bearings, the spindle can achieve speeds up to 6,000 rpm, making it ideal for both light and heavy precision cutting. The spindle is crafted from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, undergoing heat treatment and precise grinding. The resulting roundness is within 0.002 mm, concentricity within 0.003 mm, and the inner hole runout measured within 0.003 mm over a 300 mm test bar. Additionally, the spindle features constant temperature control with a peripheral design incorporating a circulating cooling oil circuit to maintain the "constant temperature" optimal state of the spindle head, bearings, and gears, thereby preserving the machine's highest precision. Following the adoption of this equipment, the bottleneck in the connecting rod production line was largely resolved. Figure 3 illustrates the products processed on-site.
Our factory has chosen other Taiwanese machine tools based on the specific conditions and process requirements of the products. For instance, the Youji (oil machine) CNC vertical lathe boasts a numerically controlled indexing function on its worktable, vastly broadening the scope of processing. Unlike European designs, its indexing mechanism employs a separate transmission system, meaning the turning and milling systems operate independently. This allows for smaller motor powers for each system. However, for machines requiring significant power and torque during workpiece machining, vibrations are inevitable. In contrast, European equipment uses a dual motor setup where both motors function simultaneously, providing greater power and torque. An additional motor serves as an anti-backlash mechanism. Figure 4 demonstrates the machine's form.
Figure 5 displays the product processed by this device, while Figure 6 shows the threading achieved by this machine inside the workpiece. Taiwan's Youji Machine Tool Co., Ltd. operates a large-scale production and assembly facility in the Kunshan Industrial Park, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, manufacturing various types of machine tools, including CNC vertical lathes and CNC gantry machining centers. The most popular Taiwanese machine system in China is Qiaofu’s CNC lathe ST-130C. Its massive bed is constructed from high-quality cast iron, cast in one piece, with an inclined bed saddle set at a 60° angle. Mehana high-grade cast iron is used, and the castings undergo stress relief and tempering to eliminate internal stresses. The hardened rail surfaces are treated to a hardness of (58 ± 3) HRC and then subjected to high-precision surface grinding. The hardening depth post-grinding is approximately 1 mm. The sliding surfaces of the slides all feature Teflon linings, and the main scraper plate ensures smooth and lasting guide rails. The robust rail structure design ensures no droop effect during full-stroke movement of the turret slide and tailstock slide, guaranteeing machine accuracy. The scientific design provides exceptional stability, rigidity, and precision. It is primarily used for machining axles for rolling stock. User feedback reflects positively, particularly regarding cost-effectiveness.
Figure 7 illustrates the three holes of the diesel engine block processed by Qiaofu’s CNC fixed-beam gantry mobile machining center, used in the railway system. Specifically, it focuses on the precision repair of the spindle hole, camshaft hole, and cylinder hole after wear.
However, compared to European and American machine tools for processing diesel engine blocks, there remains a gap in terms of machine tool accuracy, reliability, and reliability, particularly in the design and configuration of the accessory milling heads. The design concepts and production levels are still inferior. Figure 8 shows one of the four accessory milling heads.
During normal operation, issues arise where the accessory milling head abruptly ceases functioning, focusing attention on the accessory milling head drive chain.
It is noteworthy that Taiwan’s Youjia has strengthened its team through mergers and acquisitions and established a production base in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province, expanding its production scale and variety offerings. Notably, its CNC vertical machining centers have gained market recognition due to their stable quality, reasonable pricing, and excellent service, earning commendation from users.
In the Wuxi-Changzhou area of Jiangsu Province, the metal processing industry has scaled up, with various private enterprises possessing relatively comprehensive equipment. These enterprises initially benefited from the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, acquiring numerous outdated major pieces of equipment at low prices. After repairs and transformations, these machines facilitated the opening of markets for external material processing. Through ingenuity and perseverance, they successfully tapped into the first wave of profits. However, these machines are now obsolete and lack technological sophistication. These private enterprises have introduced a range of CNC gantry machining centers, such as those from Taiwan’s Song Ying, Yawei, Qiaofu, and Xiehong, to replace old equipment and upgrade to CNC systems. This has enhanced processing technology, propelling them toward high-end processing and better serving sectors like railways, shipbuilding, wind power, nuclear power, and mining machinery. Consequently, many domestic machine tool manufacturers have visited and learned from their experiences in machine tool transformation, understanding why they chose Taiwan’s CNC龙门 machining centers and the requirements for domestic machine tool usage.
(2) Innovation Needed for龙门Machining Centers: Qiaofu’s CNC fixed-beam gantry mobile machining center is also utilized in the railway system. It is primarily used for the three holes of the diesel engine body, specifically for the precision repair of the spindle hole, camshaft hole, and cylinder hole after wear (as seen in Figure 7).
Nevertheless, compared to European and American machine tools for processing diesel engine bodies, there remain significant gaps in terms of machine tool accuracy, reliability, and reliability, particularly concerning the design and configuration of the accessory milling heads. The design concepts and production standards are still inferior. Figure 8 shows one of the four accessory milling heads.
