In Hubei and Hunan provinces, state-owned grain storage enterprises have reportedly violated regulations by purchasing grain reserves and illegally introducing genetically modified rapeseed oil into temporary storage stocks. The revelation has sparked widespread public concern online, with many questioning the safety of genetically modified (GM) foods and whether they are being sold on the market without proper labeling or oversight.
Experts argue that no security issues have been identified so far. Jiang Juncheng, Director of the Gene and Health Committee at the Sichuan Provincial Health Science and Technology Society, stated that the government has approved GM foods for sale, emphasizing their safety. He noted that over 8.5 million rural households in 21 countries now cultivate genetically modified crops, with soybean, corn, cotton, and rapeseed accounting for approximately 70% of global GM crop cultivation areas.
However, critics remain skeptical. Opponents of GM foods argue that genetic modification disrupts natural processes and may lead to long-term environmental and health risks. They question whether the introduction of herbicide-resistant or pest-resistant genes into plants truly ensures food safety, pointing out that comprehensive scientific evidence supporting this claim is still lacking.
While these debates continue, Jiang believes that GM foods are an inevitable trend in modern agriculture. Their potential to boost traditional farming and drive economic growth is significant. Nevertheless, he stresses the importance of transparency, urging manufacturers to clearly label GM products to respect consumers' right to make informed choices.
As the discussion unfolds, the need for clear communication and responsible regulation becomes increasingly vital. With growing public awareness, it’s essential that both the government and industry work together to ensure safety, transparency, and trust in the food supply chain.
