Purchase genetically modified foods and look for government approval of marketed products

In Hubei and Hunan, some state-owned grain storage companies have reportedly violated regulations by purchasing grain reserves and illegally introducing genetically modified rapeseed oil into temporary stockpiles. The revelation has sparked widespread public concern online. As the news spread, many people began questioning whether genetically modified (GM) foods pose any health risks and whether they are being sold openly in the market. Experts emphasize that no safety issues have been confirmed so far. Jiang Juncheng, director of the Gene and Health Committee at the Sichuan Provincial Health Science and Technology Society, told reporters that the government has approved GM foods as safe for consumption. He pointed out that over 8.5 million rural households across 21 countries have been growing genetically modified crops, with GM soybeans, corn, cotton, and rapeseed covering approximately 70% of global planting areas. However, critics argue that genetic modification disrupts natural processes and may lead to long-term environmental consequences. Opponents raise concerns about the potential health effects of introducing herbicide-resistant or pest-resistant genes into food crops. They stress that there is still insufficient comprehensive evidence to fully reassure the public about the safety of such modifications. While these debates continue, Jiang acknowledges that GM foods are likely to become a major trend in the future. He highlights their potential to boost traditional agriculture and their significant market value. At the same time, he suggests that manufacturers should clearly label GM products to ensure consumers’ right to make informed choices. This report was compiled by Yang Hao, a reporter from West China Community News.
