Magna Corporation (Troy, MI) introduced two thermoplastic liftgates, the Jeep Cherokee 2019 and the Acura RDX2019. The company has announced that it will launch two more products in China by the end of this year.
Magna Exteriors President Grahame Burrow said: Magna's thermoplastic liftgate modules meet the growing demand for products that reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, expand the range of electric vehicle batteries, and improve aerodynamics.
Magna's lift doors use long glass fiber polypropylene (LGFPP) as the inner panel with 40% reinforced glass fiber. According to Magna, the reinforcement details are typically added to the inner panel in the form of metal (steel or aluminum), additional LGFPP pieces, glass or carbon reinforced mat or tape or a mixture of any of these, placed in areas of high stress. The outer sheet is typically a talc-reinforced high modulus, low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CLTE), thermoplastic olefin (TPO).
