Element 6: New applications for fully covered diamond technology

At the PITTCON (Pittsburgh Analytical Chemistry and Laboratory Exhibition) in March 2014, Element Six unveiled a groundbreaking innovation: a fully coated diamond technology designed for electroanalytical chemical sensing. This advanced solution was developed in collaboration with the University of Warwick and is set to revolutionize next-generation sensing systems across multiple industries, including biomedical research, environmental monitoring, food safety, industrial process control, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas exploration. The fully coated diamond technology features an EA-grade diamond film from Element Six, combined with a boron-doped diamond electrode that is encapsulated in a coplanar insulated diamond structure. The design allows for various electrode shapes, making it highly adaptable for different applications. This "wrapping" technique ensures seamless integration with other electrochemical devices while preserving the exceptional performance of the diamond electrode. Currently, this technology has already been successfully implemented in conductivity meters and electrochemical sensors, demonstrating its reliability and versatility. According to Professor Julie Macpherson from Warwick University, the fully coated diamond electrodes can operate in more extreme environments, significantly extending the lifespan and durability of the devices. Additionally, the precise coplanar electrode array design enhances detection sensitivity under varying conditions, making it ideal for complex analytical tasks. Mike Riding, General Manager at a British instrument manufacturer, praised the collaboration between Element Six and Warwick University, stating that the structured electrode packaging allows for smooth integration with existing analyzer equipment and diamond-based sensors. He called it a major breakthrough in electrochemical sensing technology. Element Six’s EA-grade diamond film electrodes offer significant advantages over traditional boron-doped or other electrode materials: 1. The system provides high sensitivity, selectivity, and rapid response. With 100% phase purity, it offers an extended electrolyte solution window ranging from -2.3V to +2.4V, improving the detection of ions such as sulfide, lead, copper, and zinc. 2. It reduces substrate failure mechanisms, exhibits strong resistance to corrosion under high temperature and pressure, and maintains excellent chemical inertness, durability, and a surface roughness of Ra < 0.02 µm. 3. Precise boron concentration control gives the fully coated diamond electrode metal-like conductivity, resulting in low capacitance and minimal background current. As a leader in synthetic diamond applications, Element Six continues to push the boundaries of diamond technology. Adrian Wilson, head of the company, stated that this fully coated diamond electrode is a testament to their deep understanding of synthetic diamond properties, especially for future products that require high sensitivity and robust performance in challenging environments.
