The sapphire era of smart mobile devices officially arrived in 2014

According to recent reports, Xiaomi is expected to launch its next-generation smartphone in either the third or fourth quarter of this year. The device will feature a sapphire glass panel, signaling a growing trend among smartphone manufacturers to adopt more durable and high-quality materials. In addition, several other companies are also reportedly planning their upcoming models with sapphire components, suggesting that this material may soon become more mainstream in the mobile industry. This shift has already been observed with Apple, which previously announced plans to use sapphire as the cover glass for the iPhone 6 and integrate fingerprint recognition technology on a 2-inch square sapphire screen for the iWatch. Looking ahead, it's anticipated that sapphire will be widely used in smartwatches and high-end smartphones, with broader adoption expected across mainstream devices by 2015. Currently, about 80% of sapphire usage is dedicated to substrates, while the remaining 20% is applied in non-substrate applications. According to TrendForce, the demand for sapphire in mobile devices in 2014 is projected to match the volume used in LED substrates, and it's expected to double the demand for LED substrates in 2015. By 2015, the overall demand for sapphire is forecasted to be five times that of 2013, highlighting the rapid growth in this sector. Analysts believe that sapphire is set to become one of the most widely adopted new materials in 2014. It is expected to be integrated into a wide range of devices, including wearables like the iWatch, smartphones such as the iPhone 6, LED lighting systems, commercial notebook PCs (such as touchpads and heat sinks), and even camera modules for security applications. As a result, sapphire is likely to evolve into a key component across various terminal devices, driving both innovation and market expansion.
