Scientists have developed silicon fibers that can be used as solar cells

A research team at the University of Pennsylvania recently announced the successful development of silicon fibers that are thinner than hair and can be used as solar cells. The research team fills the particles of solar cell materials layer by layer into the voids of silicon fibers. It is this tiny silicon fiber that absorbs solar radiation and converts it into electricity. Imagine sewing them into your clothes and charging your phone while you walk. Hurry to pray for it.

Papers on the research results will be published in the latest issue of Advanced Materials magazine. With some early ideas and preparations, the research team succeeded in producing silicon fibers with integrated electronic component hair thickness. Its main function is not to transmit or use energy, but also to generate energy.

Unlike most people who are trying hard to turn solar cells into fibers, the team from another perspective turned a silicon fiber into a solar cell. Using their early research to develop high-pressure chemical technology, they packed the particles of the too-high energy battery material layer by layer into the voids of the silicon fiber. The result is that this tiny silicon fiber absorbs solar radiation and converts it into electrical energy.

The head of the study, John Badding, said in an interview:

With this slender silicon fiber we can do a lot of things that we didn't dare to think about before: we could weave it into fabrics, use it to generate electricity, charge equipment, make chemical sensing and biomedical devices.

The research team said that they have been able to manufacture several meters of optical fiber, and they hope that one day their technology will be able to manufacture up to 10 meters of this fiber. They hope that one day their work will lead to a type of optical fiber that can be wound and can be used to power or charge the device by absorbing the surrounding solar radiation.
