How to distinguish the plastic wrap of PE and PVC

On December 1, the national standard for "self-adhesive plastic wrap for foods" was officially implemented. Most plastic wraps are not clearly marked with the “new national standard”, indicating the mode of use, heating method, maximum temperature resistance and warning.

Most plastic wraps have no warning signs

From December 1st, the "Standard for Plastic Self-adhesive Preservative Film for Food" was officially implemented. The new national standard divides food wrap into polyethylene film (PE), polyvinyl chloride film (PVC), and polyvinylidene chloride film (PVDC). The new national standard stipulates that the plastic wrap that can be used for packaging food must be marked with the words “food”. The plastic wrap that can be used for heating in a microwave oven should be marked as "can be used in microwave ovens", heating method and maximum temperature resistance. The new national standard also requires PVC cling film to be marked with warning language such as “cannot be touched with greased food”, “not heated by microwave oven”, “not for high temperature use”, otherwise sales are strictly prohibited.

There are many brands of food wrap films sold by supermarkets. Most of the brands introduce functional labels for cling film, such as “thickening” and “preservation”. Basically, they are labeled “PE materials” and non-toxic labels. Most of them are labeled with manufacturers and production. Basic information such as date, size specifications, materials, etc. Only the plastic wrap of individual brands indicates “food packaging” or “refrigerator and microwave oven”, and some even have no label. Some plastic wraps that cannot be heated in a microwave oven do not have warnings such as “not to be used at high temperatures”, but only indicate “normal temperature, use of the refrigerator”. Some brands of cling film are marked with the word "PVC" in a prominent position, but there is no warning that "can not touch the food with fat". Many consumers buy plastic wrap and generally look at the price and specifications. Little is known about the type and common sense of cling film.

Don't pack cooked food with PVC film

Dong Jinshi, vice president and secretary general of the International Food Packaging Association, pointed out that in the process of making PVC cling film, in order to increase the toughness and transparency of the film, about 35% of plasticizer is added, if this additive is precipitated after encountering heat , into the food, constitutes a food safety hazard.

It is necessary to see the scope of application when purchasing the cling film after the implementation of the new standard. In particular, it is necessary to pay attention to prohibiting the use of PVC cling film to directly package cooked food and fat food.

To distinguish PVC cling film and PE cling film, experts remind consumers that it is best to "look at two tears and three fires". PVC cling film is better in transparency, stronger in strength and less prone to tearing. The flame is black, black smoke, pungent smell, will not drip, will automatically extinguish after leaving the fire source. When the PE cling film is burned, the flame is yellow, tasteless, and will drip oil. After leaving the fire source, it can continue to burn. If the label is PVC material or the label is unknown, consumers are advised not to buy or use it.

PE cling film can be heated, but the temperature should not exceed 110 ° C, because the temperature is too high, the plastic wrap will precipitate toxic substances. If you want to heat the food with plastic wrap, you should puncture the plastic wrap to make the wrap film breathable and prevent the effect of excessive temperature on the cling film.
